The Venue and Getting There

How do I get to the ANJA Retreat Venue?

Venue Name: Steeles Island Retreat

Address: 20 River St, Carlton TAS 7173

GPS Coordinates: -42.877521938305286, 147.65104254100515

The drive to Steeles Island from Hobart Airport takes approximately 25 minutes, or around 45 minutes from the Hobart CBD, depending on traffic. For those unfamiliar with Hobart, be aware that traffic incidents on Tasman Bridge can cause long delays.  You might need to use Bowen Bridge to get across to the Eastern Shore. It's worth checking traffic reports.

A word of caution: GPS and satellite navigation systems don't always lead you to the right place. The area also has some similarly named roads that can cause confusion - Carlton River Road, Carlton Beach Road, and River Street are easy to mix up, so keep an eye out.

Step-by-step directions

Take the Tasman Hwy/A3 to the town of Sorell (east of Hobart Airport)

Take the Arthur Hwy/A9 southeast to the town of Forcett

Turn right onto Old Forcett Road/C334 and continue through to Carlton

Turn left onto Carlton River Road/C334

Turn right onto Carlton Beach Road

               Continue straight onto Thagenna Road

               Turn left onto River Street

Keep left to stay on River Street (Note: River Street forks here — the right branch leads to Carlton Beach, the left to Steeles Island)

Follow the left branch of River Street to Steeles Island Retrea

Once through the entrance, continue another ~700 m to The Homestead.

About Steeles Island

Steeles Island is a unique, peaceful and privately-owned island, surrounded by sandy shores. It is located on the picturesque southeast coast of Tasmania. The biodiversity of Steeles Island is relatively well-documented, with numerous native plant species thriving on the Island and providing habitat to native animals. The adjacent wetlands are abundant with birdlife. It is of archaeological interest, with middens on the southern end of the Island dating back thousands of years. Steeles Island is of historical importance with a connection to the convict era and the first non-indigenous settlers in the area.

The island is perfect for guests requiring easy access to facilities.  All indoor and outdoor living areas are on the one flat surface, ideal for guests using walking sticks, frames or wheelchairs.
